ANDORRA

For 715 years, from 1278 to 1993, Andorra, sandwiched between Spain and France, high in the Pyrenees lived under a unique co-principality, ruled by French and Spanish leaders, the French head of state and the Spanish bishop of Urgel. In 1993, this feudal system was modified with the titular heads of state retained, but the government transformed into a parliamentary democracy. Long isolated and impoverished, Andorra achieved considerable prosperity since World War II through its tourist industry. While many immigrants are attracted to the thriving economy by its low taxes.

Andorrans had long been able to see the Eurovision Song Contest on neighbouring French and Spanish television. In 2004 national broadcaster RTVA entered the competition for the first time. Following three unsuccessful and largely ignored entries, RTVA decided to change direction in 2007 by entering teenage punk band Anonymous and came within eleven points of qualifying for the final.
