ATHENS 2006 : BETTING (April 24th)

It's betting update number five. This week we're tacking eleven bookmakers and two betting exchanges on www.oddschecker.com  and also another three online bookmakers, Australian Centerbet , Scandinavian site Nordicbet and Irish bookmakers Boylesports

With the growing number of bookmakers being added to the calculation I would have expected some significant changes to the ranking, however it now appears that the odds have been established, and apart from some longer odds on the outsiders and one or two minor changes, there is nothing significant to report this week.

The one new option that people may be interested in is on the Centrebet site, which is now offering odds on each of the semi-finalists, to make it through to the final. it's one of these bets that I'm going to make this week's "Bet of the Week". I have a strong feeling that despite its low ranking in the polls, that the Albanian entry is going to surprise people in the same way as the Macedonian entry did in 2005 and make it through to the final. The odds on this are 2/1, and with a wager of £20, the potential returns are £60.

Russia's Dima Bilan now looks like a certain finalist

There's very little movement on the projected scoreboard compiled from the betting odds. Greece continues to be the overwhelming favourite, followed by Romania and Sweden. These three have a significant lead over the other entries and this is unlikely to change until reports from the rehearsals in Athens start to filter back.

One entry that continues to gain support is the Russian song "Never Let You Go" sung by Dima Bilan. This has now established itself  as one of the favourites to make it through to the final.

No other country makes any significant climb this week. Heading in the opposite direction are the the entries from Poland and Turkey which may have their work cut out to make it to the final.

As there seems to be very little change, I'm only going to do one more update to the bookmakers odds before I head to Athens.
