 | BULGARIA |
Bulgaria is a Balkan country of spectacular
mountains and a coastline on the Black Sea. From the 9th century
the Bulgarian Empire occupied much of the Balkan Pennsula. During
the 14th Century Bulgaria became part of the Ottoman Empire,
however following the example of the Greeks to the south and with
help from Russia, Bulgaria gained independence in 1878. The two
World Wars of the 20th Century brought border changes, abolition of
the monarchy and a communist take-over. Following the end of
communism the country endured economic turmoil in the 1990s
but the country recovered and is set to join the E.U. in
2007. Bulgarian television transmitted the Eurovision Song Contest
for a couple of years before its first participation in Kyiv in
2005, however after two attempts Bulgaria has yet to make it
through to the Eurovision final. With interest in the competition
not as high as in its neighbours, Bulgaria's long term
participation is in doubt.
