 | CYPRUS |
The island of Cyprus is in the Eastern
Meditteranean and while geographically part of Asia, it has long
been considered European. After three centuries of Ottoman rule,
Britain annexed Cyprus in 1914, and it became a crown colony in
1925. During the 1950s a Greek Cypriot uprising sought unification
with Greece. In 1960 Cyprus gained independence after an agreement
between the Greek and Turkish communities but in the following
years inter-communal vioence forced the U.N. to establish a peace
keeping force. Following a coup by Greek Cypriots in 1974, Turkish
forces invaded and the island was partioned. In 2003 Greek
Cypriots rejected a proposal for re-unification. Because the
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not internationally
recognised, it is the Greek Cypriot southern part that has
represented Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest since 1981.
Despite some good results, Cyprus has never seriously challenged
for victory in the contest.
