THIS YEAR'S ENTRY

Ukraine made its Eurovision debut in 2003 and too just one year to work out what it took to win the contest as Ruslana and "Wild Dances" claimed victory in Istanbul in 2004. An surprisingly successful staging of the contest in 2005 was slightly marred by a disappointing performance of the home entry, but in Athens in 2006, Ukraine bounced back in the Top 10, meaning that this year's entry is an automatic finalist.

This year Ukrainian broadcaster Channel One decided to have a national final. The selection was held on March 9th at the NTU TV Studios in Kyiv. The winner was chosen by a mixture of televoting and a jury. The favourite in both sections was the the song "Danzing" written and performed by the female impersonator Andrei Danilko under his stage name of Verka Serduchka.

Andriy Mykhailovych Danylko was born October 2nd 1973 in Poltava, Ukraine. Though a relativly successful composer and musican and composer of ambient music under his own name he is better known by his stage name Verka Serduchka a character based on a Ukrainian housewife who doubles as a comedian, pop singer and rather a rather unusually styled dancer.

His stage personality of Verka Serduchka is a rather extravagant and flamboyant woman. Under this disguise Andriy has been performing since the early 1990s. This stage name was invented by Andriy for the KVN student humor contest, combining the randomly picked first name Verka with the real last name of his former school classmate Anya Serduk.

In 1997 the first the first songs "Prosto Vera", "Abrikosy" were released. Later, other tracks like "Ya rozhdena dlya lyubvi", "Ya vyshla na perron", "Vaza i pion", "Controler", "Po chut-chut" were released and the music videos became very well known. He gained an invitation to appear on Ukrainian channel "1+1" "SV-show" where he portraited a train conductor Verka Serduchka.

Since the autumn 1998 the show was broadcast simultaneously on Russian channel "TV-6". This show is the one that brought huge popularity to the comic and he issued music albums as Verka Serduchka: "Ha-ra-sho!", "Zheniha hotyela", "The Best. Neizdannoe", "Tralli-valli" and also the instumental album "Posle tebya" under his own name. All these albums sold well with "Ha-ra-sho!" alone selling over half a million copies

Under the Verka Serduchka persona he appeared in various musicals of Russian/Ukrainian co-productions. Has created a solo musical "History of Verka Serduchka". In 2005 verka made a first attempt to enter Eurovision both for Russia and for Ukraine but was disqualified in both countries: in Ukraine due to failure to appear for preview-video shoot and in Russia because of a failure to submit lyrics of the song. After claiming in one of his music videos: "I've decided, I'll go to Eurovision representing Kazakhstan, let others win too!". In 2006 was considered a candidate to represent Poland in a duet with Polish act "Renia Paczkowska", but Renia aka Mihal Wisnievski decided to enter contest with own band "Ich Troje".

Shortly after the selection of this year's Ukrainian entry, there were strong criticism of the selection by several prominent people in the Ukraine, claiming that the act was not a suitable international representative for the country. There has been no international promotion for the Ukrainian entry and it has not done well in internet polls, however the fact that Verka is known across all of the Soviet Union and the catchy nature of the song, has meant that it is doing well with the bookmakers. The song has also been re-recorded with a heavier baseline (the version that you can hear above) and it's believed that this is the arrangement which will be performed in Helsinki.

WEBMASTER REVIEW : Ukraine's answer to Dame Edna combines two of my pet hates, childish novelty songs and drag queens and I really hope that it does not do well in Helsinki. However I have to say that its memorable and in today's Eurovision, that's a major plus. I think that this is guaranteed Top 5, whether I like it or not.  ____________________________________

YOUR REVIEWS

"This isn't drag it's dada, it's Onescu. And Beckett. And it will be top 3 unless Denmark gets drawn right before it" - John Egan (Canada)
"Now what do we have here? Surely one of the most controversial ESC "acts" ever. Andrey Danilko aka Verka tried to represent Ukraine,Russia and even Poland in the past but never made it to the ESC, despite being extremly popular in eastern Europe, especially in the CIS. This time he was more lucky when he won the ukrainian national final with his trilingual entry " Danzing ". Even if its kinda weired, its also very catchy and extremely visual. Best requirements for being successful - or even to win it all. A big favorite for sure." -Paul Hutter (Germany)
"Hate this really hate it , but you know what don't be surprised to see this doing very very well . Pity UK is after it" -Mark Wood (UK)
"Begining the worst run of Eurovision nonsense ever, with UK and Romania to follow. I'm praying Denmark gets drawn before it, and they will all blend into a quarter hours of bad comic cabaret. I guarantee the "boo boys" will have an axe to grind with this but unfortunatly this guy is big in the  former USSR, so it's probably top ten no matter what" -Ian Carson (Ireland)
"The joke entry that is so annoyingly catchy - I love this - its so mad/mental, lookslike such fun - the Wizard of Oz on Ecstasy! This is for sure gona be in the Top 5 if not the winner! I love it, voters will love this, and the fact its in the east only makes a sure cert! " -Frank Rafferty (Ireland)
"Just a mess. The worst song this year." -Sean Casey (USA)
"In my opinion the best novelty and irony entry this year and a superb dance song. You hardly can sit still when your hear it. In this way it is similar to Athena 2004. But after all it is a love or hate act and we have to wait till we see the performance on the big night. Will Verka rock Helsinki or will it be just ridiculous?". - Thorsten Beckmann (Germany)
"Interesting dance/rap number. Has some hope if it gets a phenomenal routine like Ruslana's "Wild Dancing" of 2004"- David Berlinger (Israel)
"At some point, people watching Eurovision are going to see a song and go, no that is TOO silly, we can't vote for that... I think this song is it. If you wanted to vote for a song with a twist, why wouldn't you vote for Sweden instead?."- Andrew Hordern (Australia)
"Be afraid, be very afraid. I hate this song but, oh my God, I just can not get it out of my head. I know it all, every last bit of it after just 1 listen and these days that's what Eurovision is all about. My 5 year old son heard it once and absolutely loves it. Great draw at 18 and will be top 2 on May 12th and quite possibly this years winner, (God help us!) The best description I've heard so far of this "person" is "Timmy Mallet in drag"!." - Jimmy Kempson (Ireland)
